Rocket Companies named Alessio Sanfilippo CEO of Redfin, ending nearly eight months in which Rocket CEO Varun Krishna led the Seattle brokerage on an interim basis.
Sanfilippo joins from Meta, where he served as vice president of insights for Reality Labs and led teams across data science and user research. He previously led data and analytics at Intuit, applying AI and machine learning across TurboTax and QuickBooks. Earlier roles took him through WhatsApp, SAP, GoSeek, Hotwire, and United Airlines.
None of those companies sell homes. That difference helps explain the appointment.
Glenn Kelman had led Redfin for more than two decades before stepping down in January, roughly six months after Rocket completed its $1.75 billion acquisition. Krishna then assumed the CEO role while Rocket conducted an internal and external search.
The length of that search suggests Rocket was defining the leadership profile Redfin needed for its next phase under new ownership.
Krishna and Sanfilippo previously worked together at Intuit. In announcing the appointment, Krishna emphasized Sanfilippo’s ability to use data and technology to improve complex consumer products. He also connected the hire directly to Rocket’s plan to bring “home search, brokerage, mortgage, closing and servicing into one experience.”
His appointment centers the mandate on integration. Rocket already has deep experience in mortgage origination and brokerage operations. Sanfilippo brings a career spent making complicated consumer products easier to understand and use. Buying a home presents a similar product challenge.
Sanfilippo arrives as Redfin prepares to rebuild part of its rentals business.
Under a proposed settlement announced by the Federal Trade Commission last week, Redfin committed to restart its internet listing services (ILS) business within six months after the order becomes final. The agreement would resolve allegations that Zillow paid Redfin $100 million to withdraw from that market. Zillow and Redfin did not admit wrongdoing.
The relaunch will require Redfin to build the supporting technology and staff a dedicated operation. The proposed order specifically calls for a general manager alongside sales and customer support employees.
Sanfilippo’s background positions him to approach the requirement as a product rebuild, shaped around the data systems and customer experience Redfin wants for its next phase.
He has never led a company of Redfin’s size as chief executive, and his résumé contains no direct real estate operating experience. His relevant strength lies in connecting customer behavior with product decisions across large consumer platforms.
That experience fits Rocket’s stated goal of turning Redfin’s home-search audience into part of a connected homeownership platform. The appointment suggests Rocket values a systems builder who can link those businesses under one customer experience.
