CEO Succession in Late October 2026: 11 Handoffs Compared

November 2, 2026

Between October 23 and November 2, 2026, at least 11 US-listed companies announced a CEO handoff or saw one take effect. Of the 11 incoming leaders, 5 were internal executives, 3 were external hires and 3 came from the company's own board. The data below draws on SEC filings, company releases and the Boardroom Alpha weekly executive moves report.

[Table 1]

Pattern 1: Insiders Still Lead

5 of the 11 successors were internal: Genworth (CFO), HF Sinclair (president and COO), Herc (a long-tenured operator), Hormel (president) and Clean Harbors (co-CEO to sole CEO). At HF Sinclair and Herc, the outgoing CEO moves to executive chair, which keeps the predecessor involved for a set period.

Pattern 2: Boards Step In When Exits Are Sudden

When a CEO left with immediate effect, boards turned to their own directors. Fluence named director Axel Meier interim CEO on November 2 (GlobeNewswire). CooperCompanies made director Walter Rosebrough interim executive chair on October 27. Mattel chose Roger Lynch, its independent lead director, as chairman and CEO, with the CEO role starting on or before November 2 (Pulse 2.0).

Pattern 3: External Hires Come With Runways

The 3 external hires followed different schedules. Align built a 2-month overlap for Jennifer Davis (Align). LKQ named Salvatore Abbate effective December 15 after a cooperation agreement with activist investors. AngioDynamics hired Eric Honroth from Getinge, effective November 2 (Kalkine Media).

[Table 2]

Pattern 4: Activists Shape the Timing

2 of the 11 changes followed activist involvement. Rosebrough joined the CooperCompanies board under a December 2025 agreement with Browning West. LKQ hired Abbate after its agreement with Ancora and Engine. In both cases the board, not the outgoing CEO, set the transition terms.

What Boards and Search Firms Should Take From This

  • Keep a director ready to serve as interim CEO. 3 of 11 handoffs relied on one.
  • Test internal candidates before the decision. Genworth used an interim stint to do so.
  • Plan an overlap or a firm start date for external hires to cut transition risk.
  • Track activist agreements, which often come before a CEO change.
